Assembly of Lines
Whilst Katya was making 'Assembly of Lines' 2022 collages of fabric of disused shirts on wood, she began experimenting how the cuffs and collars of the shirts could be constructed into a different garment. Katya began to weave the cuffs and collars and sketched ideas of what the outcome could be. She attached the buttoned placket to the sides of the cuffs and created a bag, she continued to sketch what needed to be added and adjusted with only applying the fabric of the shirts. The work presents the process of how disused garments can be transformed into something useful instead of are being thrown away which is affecting the environment. The textile production requires huge amounts of chemicals, water, energy and other natural resources whilst the decomposition process generates chemicals which pollute the environment and degrades ecosystems as well as creating societal impacts worldwide. However, we are becoming more environmentally aware via the news, online, social media and documentaries on the subject. Textiles such as fabric, fibres and garments are capable of provoking fundamental changes if designed in ways for them to reuse, remake and recycle. The work reflects the concept 'Re-make' from the contexts of textile culture and the possibilities to re-make and re-think textile in construction of the world, conditions of labor, it's industry and how it affects the environment.
